Try to check if your auxiliary fan is working. I'm not sure what you have for your Pajero but mine has 2. 1 big one right in front of the radiator and 1 smaller one just behind the bumper.

Subject : Nissan Minstral
Hi this could be a long story we have a Minstral 95 2.7 deisel Auto we have been having a problem with over heating while 4x4 driving it got to the point where the motor cut out and we had to get towed out of some very steep 4x4 tracks quite a dramatic couple of hours. When we got out from the high country the motor had cooled down so filled up with water and the motor started first time it sounded good so we started to drive home. Firstly the gear box would not change gear it was stuck i second also the dash board light IE 4x4 light keeped flashing and making a ticking noise as well as the Air Con light when turned on anyway when we got home some 2 hours latter i turned off the motor and now it will not start not even showing any dash light it is dead i am thinking it has gone into a safe mode can any body confirm this or give me some idea of the problem.

  • Subject : Re : Nissan Minstral
By the sounds of it you have cooked the motor. It is always bad news in a diesel when the water level drops.
Have a look at the NISSAN section of this site and you will see numerous descriptions of what happens.
Since this message response is 2.5 months after the fact, I presume by now you have replaced the motor.
    All the best.

  • Subject : Re : TORSION BARS
What brand/model are we talking about? Refer to the Nissan/Mitsu/Ford/Vauxhall sections and you may get more info???
Usually you raise the vehicle on on jacks and stands to take the weight off the suspension, then unscrew the tensioner bolts, then remove the tensioner arm off the torsion rods, and you can remove the crossmember.
    Hope this helps.

I’m hoping that some of you nice people out there will have either come across this, or experienced it for yourselves. I have a “W” Reg, Vauxhall Frontera 2.2 limited diesel with an automatic gearbox.
The problem that I have is that it feels like it has no power i.e. it wants to but there is just nothing there, and that the automatic changing of gears is somewhat delayed especially in top gear revving up to three thou+ before it will decide to change up to it. The engine management light has also come on just to worry me some more as well. It smokes a bit blue on a cold start up but soon stops and I have to wonder if the turbo works at all. The car is fairly new to me and also its my first auto so I know diddly swat to make things even more interesting. There are no strange noises bangs or clunks when it changes gear just no power (to change gear) on a flat it struggles to get to 50 mph but once going it can reach 65mph so at least I wont get done for speeding!!!!!!!!

Subject : Would this forum like a free Club Display Stand at Jap & Jeep Jam?
Looking at the format, am I right in saying this forum first started life as the message board of Formula 4x4? It was well used then and it still seems very popular. Only just found it again.

Anyway, as you will see from within the manufacturer posts, I am the Event Organiser of Jap & Jeep Jam off-road jamboree in July 2009. Would this forum like a free Club Display Stand (these include forums and small off-road groups) at Jap & Jeep Jam? It is a good way of 'internet faces' to actually get together at one time and place. If so, simply contact me and I can arrange it. Cheers!

Hi

I thought i tell you about a new service we have setup. save this information somewhere for when you can't find the parts you are looking for.

When you text the breakers ring you back on your mobile.

When you text the automated sysem it sends the information to 300+ breakers in the uk. Very good system

type spares + make + model + what parts you need to 82055. The word Spares activates the automated system.

You text once the automated system will upload your request in minutes.

hope that was helpful

Subject : Suzuki SJ / Panda 4X4
Hi,

I am entering this year’s Mongol Rally – driving from London to Ulaan-Baatar, Mongolia, rules stipulate a 1 litre engine or smaller. I have no 4X4 experience but am looking at using either a Fiat Panda 4X4 or Suzuki SJ410. If any one could offer any advise/experience on their respective suitability/reliability/serviceability/parts availability that would be great.

Also, does anyone know of any online buying guides or tips of the key things to look for when buying one.

Muchos gracias,
Adam.

Netty, by now you will have had a lot of heartache and you probably don't have the vehicle anymore. If you go to the Nissan section on this site and lok up various reports it will probably bring back bad memories.
For future information, coolant on the ground plus gurgling means a new engine if you don't fix the leak.
    Good luck

Subject : Looking for a Shop near Miami?
Hello, I am planning on moving to Miami, FL, and am looking to find the local 4x4 clubs, and a place to park my 4x4 beast while I finish it up. It is no ordinary 4x4,actualy more of a 6x4 it is 26 ft long, 3 axles, cabover, 6 seater, all truck. I am trying to hurry and get as much finished on it as I can here in Illinois, so that it is in one piece to move on a trailer. I also have a '68 Plymouth Fury wagon 4x4, and a '61 Merc. Comet Baja, I'm planning on bringing also. I hope to race the Comet, and the Fury is more of a trail rider. The beast is my go anywhere, do anything truck, but terrible on fuel efficiency, but will be a blast to drive. Please let me know where I can settle in for a bit, can barter or rent for reasonable price.

sounds like the pad is worn down to the rivets, or it could be caused by crank oil seal leaking on the pad, or if the clutch has external ajustment try to release it some may help it out , but i say replace it .I would go with it being worn . Hope this helps . bye

Subject : Dihatsu TERIOS- Revs too hard?
Hi. I dont know much about cars, so hopefully someone can help me out! I have a 2001 Dihatsu Terios. The problem is it revs 4000rvs anything over 95km/hr? The engine struggles so much on the highway, i cant keep up with the traffic and i can pratically watch my petrol gauge fall as it chews the petrol as a result of revving so hard! Is this normal?

What can i do about it? Please help! Thankyou heaps :)

try change distributor cap rotor arm if you have one + plugs if any if this dont help first make sure if its petrol problem find out if the petrol line has a diaphragm or its an electronic problem. make sure fuel is flowing free into the head, and have the electroic control box under the bonnet checked out if you have the coil checked out as well do not buy anything untill all this is checked out or it could cost you a lot of money if everything is ok check head valves never had a lot to do with this 4x4 but its all basic stuff hope it helps

Subject : sliding cargo tray
Has anyone seen a new sliding cargo tray called Stow-More? I?ve just bought one for my L200 and have to say it?s great. For a new product I was a little apprehensive to how it would perform but have to say it?s definitely a real winner. I have been using it for my business (electrician), the tray slides out making it easy for me to access my tools and equipment, I was thinking of buying the toolbox for the back of it now ? if anyone has got one fitted already I?d be keen to know how much you use it.

Have a look at the website stow-more.co.uk and you?ll see it for yourself, the other major plus point for me is that it?s metal and not plastic which makes it easy to keep clean and it looks a bit more slick.

Subject : Intermittent Electrical Fault on Terrano II
Can anyone help please? I drive a petrol P reg Terano 2 which has done 92,000 miles. Recently it started as usual but heater fan, wipers, washers and radio failed - which made me suspect a fuse. I continued my short journey and parked for a few minutes. When I turned key to restart all I got was a "clonk" from starter motor. On about 3rd attempt car started. On reaching home I pushed and pulled fuses and battery leads - now for a few days car has been starting OK and everything is working. I would be grateful if anyone who has knowledge of this fault could offer any advice or give an inkling into what caused the problem. Many thanks.

The auxillary feed to the battery is loose, broken or dirty. Check also the starter earth, but would put 99% guess on being the auxiullary lead, a smaller lead that attaches to the battery live. This powers most things especially internally. Do also check the battery terminals for cracking or dirt as this may also cause probs!

Subject : Failed MOT
I own a '98 Fiat Marea 1.9TD and it has just failed MOT on emissions. 3.98ppm (Max 3.0ppm for this type) It has always produced a bit of smoke when under accelleration but I thought this was normal. I have put 10 litres flushing oil through engine, new oil & filter, new air filter, new fuel filter full to brim with injector cleaner, razzed 75 miles to max rpm in every gear, and still it failed. Garage's own engineer took out on road and carried out re-test but to no avail. It appears to have had a new or re-tested injector pump fitted in Jul 03. I wonder why? Any useful suggestions gratefully received as I am getting p----- off and dodging coppers. An illegal motor for the sake of 1ppm of smoke. Ridiculous or what???

Subject : 2.8 pajero cold starting problems
Hi. I have a 2.8 pajero 1994. When cold eg. in the mornings, it starts straight up, then after several seconds it misfires and cuts out. Then it is hard to start and once started kicks out a load of white/grey smoke. Then after about 30 seconds it clears and runs fine, if a little smokey (dark smoke) when warm. I have had it checked out and have been told its the front oil seal on the fuel injector pump, leaking oil into the fuel and/or air. I have another pump to fit, although i have lost my workshop manual CD. Does anyone have the information on changing the fuel injector pump and timing it>?

I have even disconnected the rear brakes to remove the compensator out of the system but it still does it, but if I clamp off the front callipers - perfect. I have just bought a SSR-G SURF 3.0L 95`N`REG but the rear springs sag by almost 2".
What would you advise doing? Do I need new springs? If so what is the best make/size/price/quality I should get and is it a DIY job?
What would happen if I left it alone? Apart from it looking bad?
Thank you very much.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Try adding some Redex to the tank to see if that`ll help? Worth a try and it`s the cheapest course of action to start off with. When did you last change the fuel filter? Have you purged the filter that traps the water (assuming you have one) lately? It could be excess water in the trap, a blocked filter, dirty injectors/pump.
All these can be remedied very cheaply but the sooner you do it the better.

Subject : Maverick help . . .
Couple of problems with my '95 LWB Maverick 2.7.
Simple one first - any idea where I can get a spare wheel carrier from at a reasonable price - existing one has rusted to nothing?
More complicated is a cooling system problem. System seems to pressurise itself and vents coolant to the expansion tank where it stays until it overflows. Have recently had a new radiator fitted (because the old one split) and local garage fairly confident there is no air-lock in the system. Seems to run alright despite this and doesn't appear to overheat but it is a pain to have to keep draining the expansion tank and pour the coolant back into the radiator. Anyone experienced anything similar?

does it have a recovery type radiator cap. ie allows the coolant to be returned to the radiator as the cooling system cools down.

    • Subject : Re : Re : Maverick help . . .
Thanks Steve - answer is I'm not sure but probably not as I can see how the pressure release works on the radiator cap to let water through to the expansion tank, but not how it would return when the presssure dropped. Anyway, it seems that the problem may have cured itself since the weather has got cooler and I have been using the heater - there are some interesting gurgling noises from the heater matrix when I fiorst get going then everything seems to settle down so maybe it was some from of airlock problem. Cheers, Vaughan.

  • Subject : Re : Freelander 1.8xi (2000 year) uneven rear tyre wear
Landrover told me that this phenominon is called blocking. It seems to happen to lots of Freelanders and occurs less if you fit Pirelli;s which Landrover recommend.
There is a design fault that they do not admit to that causes tyre distortion due to axle wind. Ours seemed to become worse during towing. The noise from the tyres at 50mph was deafening.
Get ready for multiple head gasket failures on the 1.8, a very common occurance i;m afraid.

Check your propshaft viscouse coupling, these are supposed to alow for the different speeds of the front and rear drive train so as not to cause axle wind up, unfortunatly they tend so sieze up and can cause the rear tyres to "block" and if not corrected can cause premature failier of the IRD (bad news very expensive!)

Subject : shogun sport 2.5 td
Hi,Is it me or am i missing something,i`ve owned this vehicle for 7 weeks now and am alarmed at the rate it uses diesel, unless you go everwhere at 50 mph (i.e on a motorway etc) is there anyone else who has the same vehicle i believe the L200 has the same engine in it(it`s a 04 plate warrior) with the 18" wheels.I think some of the problem comes from the low gearing perhaps some from the tyre size but even so 22 mpg seems heavy considering i have a hilux on a 03 plate doing 11mpg more going the same places etc etc.I would appreciate the views of anyone who owns one of vehicles just to put my mind at rest. Thanks Drew.

I have an 8 month old Warrior TD and am just about to get shot of it!!! I am going for an 02 reg discovery instead - I have decided that the vehicle has lost it's initial appeal - When I first got mine I became very friendly with the local garage as I spent so much time, and money in there - it has loosened up a bit but is still a thirsty old beast!!! And unfortunately low revs is the only way to counteract it's thirst!

    Hi
Ive got a 2002 2.5 td equippe, it does 360 miles on a tank full. ( that not bad is it?)

one thing to not is the air filter, take it out & remove the plastic cover that cover half of it, it then give a noticable performance increase.

also dont for get to make sure the oil is fully synthetic.

Hi,guys,I`m one step infront of you Peter,I sourced a Ripspeed airfilter to eliminate all the twists and turns the air intake makes before getting to the filter and this seems to have made a noticeable difference, not so much in the power but in m.p.g.As i use this to tow a large caravan the difference was both pleasing to the eye and the pocket.Having just fitted the filter on Saturday i`ll run it a while yet before singing from the rooftops but up to now "SO FAR SO GOOD".

Try fuel filter but first try reprogramming the EMU. This is easy.

Disconnect battery for a couple of minutes, then reconnect. Start engine and let idle for 10 minutes with no AC, lights or any power drain. This programmes the EMU idle function. Then switch off and restart only this time with aircon on, windows open and idel for 10 minutes. Switch off and voila, the EMU is reprogrammed

Not sure if this helps, but I have had similar probs when the fuel lift pump failed (it's purely mechanical and fitted on front nearside of engine; the circlip holding the actuating pin in it failed). You might also want to check that the steel fuel pipes on top of the fuel tank sender unit are not corroded through.

hi, the a/t switch is a selectable auto. in hold you have economy mode,in the center you have auto, and in power you have sports mode Wink.
    -----------------------------------------
Button affects the operation of the gearbox. Power it will change to a lower gear earlier and rev out more before changing up.
Hold, the vehicle starts in second gear and then tends to hold a gear longer. A good option for offroad when using low ratio. On road may be useful on slippery surfaces.

Subject : Not so super-trooper
My 1987 lwb trooper drives fine in 2wd but complains bitterly in 4wd. I'm fairly sure its a problem with the auto hubs but it's possible it may be something else in the front section of the drive train.
Any thoughts or advice about known faults would be helpful.
Cheers.

  • Subject : Re : Not so super-trooper
I,ve sorted the problem with the 4wd. It turned out to be as simple as the circlips on the end of the front driveshafts coming adrift. This was letting the shafts move back from the auto-hubs reselting in only partial drive. The sheer noise and vibration this made was terrific and seemed to point to far worse problems than this. Worth noting I think, before anyone getting a similar problem spends a fortune at a garage.

From main dealer forget it aproxx 1000 pounds, to do the job yourself . no chance unless your a cmpetant mechanic with plenty of time on your hands a red cape and wear your unerpants on the outside colour red.
In otherwords what a bitch you will have replacing the bearings and rubber oil seals. one ii would never try again, everythin is rusted up and practicaly impossible to part. If your parts cost about 35.oo from a main dealer your lucky they have considered you trade, assuming you are of corse to attack such afault. My advise and you may take this or leave it to your peril if you dont. Is
find a 4x4 breakers yard with one in stock with some sort of guarentee and replace the lump and it quick easy and a hell of a lot less mess, swearig and cursing. the price will be approx 275 to 350. belive me its the best way. trust me im a doctor. who has one of thease pieces of shit. same year
and thats the beginning wait till you get the rest of the fauls at that age of car sell it quick unless your a wethy man and in that casee wy a frotera ?

good luck on this one you will be looking at about 300 to 400 pounds for a replacment rear diff if you can find one which actually isnt that hard .but your alternative is to go to main dealers and grt the parts which will cost for the offending bits around 70 pounds then find somone who will be able to do this job in a resonable time is impossible, as its known to be a complrt and utter bastard of a job all the joints will be rusted solid as they all are and seperating them is a choir ive done mine but took me the best part of around 24 hours to part them then putting the oil seals in took me three attempts to succseed best option 4x4 scrapers for shure all the best good luck when its done though my advise is get rid the problems to follow are unbelivable, never ending trouble to say the least unless your the type that has loads of money to burn then by all means carry on being optermistic about trouble free motering

If you lift up the rubber boot around the gear stick, there should be a nylon collar that can be tightend. The starting problem sounds like it is due to a faulty battery.

Why have you had the head skimmed? You should check valve rockers (tappets) for cracks the same as the followers and just check everything is in order, check valve seats and guides on all valves, have they punched any holes in the pistons?

  • Subject : Re : timing belt
    Hi
Usually the valve guides crack and valves bend. They do not usually affect the pistons. You will find that your local engine remanufacturer will know what to do. Camshafts usually okay. Get a Cambelt Kit(with rollers and tensioner) when you replace the belt. Check the water pump for play aswell. If you need to replace this make sure you put the new one back in the same position. Get a Haynes manual to help.

the preasure card on the inside of your door is for standard tyres. At 44psi your ride quality will be very rough. The softer the tyre presure the better the ride but don't go bellow 28psi for onroad use.Personally I use between 33-36 psi

Hi can anyone suggest why my 2.8 n reg pajero cuts out first thing in the morning after 1-2 miles. It then starts with some difficulty but then runs fine all day. A mechanic has suggested it is the fuel pump drawing in air and that this will need to be taken off and sent to be refurbished at a cost of ?6-700. If this is the case surely it would be cutting out continually, not just from cold. I have had a new cold start rely fitted it but still cuts out.

Get hose and soak car. You should see water leaking under trim. If this is happening the water then runs to the lowest point being the front footwell. Had two do this to me. Easy to fix just put mastic under trim. Hope this helps

The main reason to change the flywheel together with the timing belt is because of cost. Doing it together saves on labor charges instead of paying similar labor charges twice because you need to dsimantle the same place to get to the timing belt andf flywheel. It is also good to change the flywheel about the same time, around every 80000 km, even though it is suppose to have longer service life than the rubber timing belt.

According to the book, when neither switch is depressed this is normal road for everyday use. The Power button is for powerfull driving uphills for example and the 2nd start button only uses gears 1&2 and is for driving in slippery conditiions. The red button allows you to select any position when the keys are out of the ignition

It sounds like the throttle might be sticking or the idle air valve might also be sticking. Another problem might be the throttle position sensor. The best thing to do is to let someone take drive recorder reading with there diagnosis equipment which will graph where the problem is when driving along. A fuel injection specialist will help you

Would any one recommend any better at the same kind of cost? Bearing in mind I am useless at mechanics and always use a garage , is the upkeep and repairs vastly greater than a regular car

    Hi
Axle oil seals and air flow meters faults. Aftermarket exhausts need to be good quality as cheap ones do not sit properly and rub on the body. You need one with a good service history if you are going to buy one. Try to get one with a low mileage and one which has not towed before. Otherwise I have not seen any with major problems. Have an AA inspection before purchasing. Its not the be all and end all but its a good guide.

Hi m8. No you dont have to keep all the tyres the same at all. The only thing you have to do is, by law, keep the same size (width, tread & profile etc) on each axle. ie: say the rear axle for instance, you cant have 265/70s on one side and 285/70 on the other. Hope this is of help to you m8y, happy motoring.

    Hi
The one on the slave cylinder is the one you want. To bleed the cylinder-apply pressure to depress the pedal(assistant)and then open the bleed nipple. Then close the nipple, then lift off the pedal. Repeat the operation (remembering to fill up the master cylinder as you go) until fluid becomes clear.

This can often be due to one of the bulbs being blown or having an intermittent connection in the high level brake light. In addition, you need to make sure the bulbs are of the correct rating and wattage, as the computer 'TESTS' these and will indicate a fault if it finds incorrect voltage draw for the number of bulbs it expects.

    Hello Simon,
On most japanese 4x4`s there are circuit breakers, that when over loaded they fail momentarily and automatically resets. Some times the reset don`t happen, so they have to be set manually. They are normally situated in or near the fuse box.
You could also try checking the connections at the switches or in the door as they might have come loose.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Chris

We do a Soft wheel cover to fit the 2002 on model which has the spare tyre slung externally. This has a hole in the centre to allow access to the wheel nuts and to allow the frame to be closed. Maybe this would fit?

On inside of door is a small plastic triangle shaped panel (directly on the other side of the mirror). Small screw holds this on, behind that are the mountings for the mirrors - just 3 small nuts that bolt through the door frame. Electrics come via a small white plastic plug/socket arrangement - you may have to remove the full door card for this to get better access

CHECK ENGINE light keeps coming on once engine gets to maximum standard operating temperature. Sometimes engine cuts out when coming to halt, especially on a long trip once revs drop below 1000 rpm. Is this to do with leaded fuel use which may damage these sensors? What's solution? Do I replace sensors then run on unleaded always? Otherwise car runs beautifully so can't quite understand???

The most likely cause unless you have a massive air leak between turbo and inlet manifold which you would hear very loudly , is the turbo itself is either getting clapped out or the wastegate actuator is opening the wastegate too soon which lowers the amount of boost and causes loss of power and black smoke. get a reputable diesel specialist or garage to check the boost pressure for you and they can tell you the probable cause.

Had the same type of problem AFTER it had had a service at the local vaux. dealers. When they had disconnected the battery the engine management unit does not have an electrical earth wire attached but relies on an earth via the main nuts/bolts. Unfortunatly the earth connection had failed and the Management settings were restored to the default factory settings ( before they are set up) resulting in black smoke like a tank starting every time you hit the pedal. The garage had to fit an Earth strap and reprogram the unit.

  • Subject : Re : shogun oil !
    Two possible areas to check
1.Engine breather blocked or leaking and causing oil to be sucked in to air intake - do not know what breathing system is used on v6
2.If you are using oil, check if exhaust smokes or smells at initial start up on a morning. If it smokes for a few seconds it could indicate valve guide or valve seal wear.
You could try changing down when driving, letting engine slow down, then put your foot to the floor. If you get a cloud of smoke, the bores could be glazed or the piston rings worn - try a compression test to see which.

on drivers side under dash you will find a relay with a small hole in base, in this hole is a reset button use a small screwdriver and press to reset, the circuit may have overloaded and cause this to trip, dont operate both windows at same time or make sure the window channel rubbers are well lubed with silicone spray eg pledge or good old mr sheen! anybody else wishing advice or a suzuki dealer with a discount scheme for genuine parts! just ask

diesel - check elctrical plugs/skts particularly throttle position sensor cable from fuel pump to first connection.
Get garage to do a diagnostic and give you print out as you really need the fault code. The print out will give you identification of faulty component(s) - in my case fuel pump ?1500 or ECU ?1000 - actually turned out to be a pin on the back of a plug had been pushed out the back when it was connected.

I am wanting a handbook for my recently aquired Pajero, but I am not too sure what the correct model is, the log book says 1991 on a J, it is diesel, 2470 cc.

I asume its the 2.2 petrol if it is only a few things to watch out for, the main thing is a noisy diff, if it has one dont panic as this is a common fault in the frontera, but keep your eye on the steering, if it drives ok and no play then i would do yourself a favour and go and buy it,ive had them for the last 7 years and what a car offroad and onroad.

Subject : Overheating Cherokee
Hi,

I own a 2002 new shape 2.5 crd cherokee which overheats when it has any serious climbing to do, usually on motorways, but it can run all day without overheating if it doesn't have to work hard. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Rob

check antifreeze concentration antifreeze also works as a heat dispersant releases heat faster than water.check thermostat is opening fully.remove and put in jug add boiling water see how far it opens.check fan belts and fan.is it direct drive, viscous or electric.check for air bubbles in header tank, head gasket.check for water flow, water pump worn

Both electric mirrors and headlight adjustments have stopped working. As both switches are located in the same place I thought that they may work off a common power feed / fuse? I can't find it! All other electrics in the car work fine. Thanks

not sure but i heard that it may be related to the headlight high/ low beam stork getting dirt on the contacts, i think if you get some electronics switch cleaner from any good maplins centre or like it may cure it, it may be that the power feed is related to the stork,

Diahatsu doesnt have a manual, the only one you get is the owners manual, Haynes etc say that the volume of diahatsu fourtrack does not warrant a manual. If you have found one then i am unaware of it, let me know, also do you know where to get a roof rack for a fourtrack.
