Subject : Isuzu TF Brakes ( or lack of them )
I have a 99 Isuzu TF Crew cab 2.8 TD. best truck I ever had, but , the brakes work OK but go to the floor. Pump them up OK but then loses pressure . Not leaking anywhere , I have changed the master cylinder with no difference at all . Its due for MOT next month & really need to sort it quickly. The handbrake warning light when handbrake is on only works when the brakes been pumped up , but goes out within about 5 seconds. Im totally confused now .
Gentlemen your thoughts please.

Just to add something else. I have tried clamping off the brake pipe to each wheel in turn to see if its a fault on one of the wheel cylinders but the fault was still there

Hi, I have a workshop manual on disc for the Trooper, bought for £5 on ebay.
Covers most models, has around 12,000 pages.
There are 1,400 pages just for the (4L30-E) auto transmission - probably why there's no diagram online!
I would first check all associated electrical connectors, especially at sensors, for good contact.
If that doesn't help I think you'll need an expert.

Subject : Bighorn Auto gear box
We have 1995 3.1TD Bighorn Lotus Edition. We use it to tow rowing boat trailers on average about once a month, not exceeding 1500 kg, which it handles very well.
Towing or not, in the last month the gear change has been odd. Sometimes it is reluctant to change up or down the gears. It is very intermittent and travelling at consistent speed is absolutely fine. Our garage have checked out the oil levels, drive train and differential and say that is all fine. They wonder if there is a problem with the gearbox itself, or whether the electronic overdrive is faulty.

Has anyone else experienced these type of problems?

Thanks

Nicky

  • Subject : Re : Bighorn Auto gear box
If it seems that the auto box can't seem to make up its mind as to what gear it should be in, try changing the throttle position sensor (potentiometer). If it's worn it can give a false reading to the trans as to when to change up/down. Hope this helps

WE have been having same problem with our 1992 3.1 auto diesel trooper (for aaggees!) the speedo kept intermittantly stopping thus affecting gear change. After months of investigation, new speedo (which did NOt work) we have discovered it was the speedo sensor (near gearbox). We removed and cleaned it, checked wires etc and now its perfect. Hope this helps

Subject : Transmission light flickers off and on - slips into a low gear
Hi, does anyone know what could be the problem with our Isuzu bighorn 1993. When driving and slowing down coming up to an intersection or giveway the 'transmission' light comes on (flickers red off and on), and then the vehicle seems to slip into a very low gear and just crawls along. Motor still runs but have to turn ignition off and start up again to run properly. The automachanics cannot find a problem or CANNOT find a problem code (code reading says all okay)!

  • Subject : Re : Transmission light flickers off and on - slips into a low gear
Hi, 1st thing check the obvious - trans fluid level. If all OK there, I would check the Input and Output Speed sensors on the nearside of the trans body (these are identical sensors so if you have to, get one only [secondhand would do]). You should have a fault code present if it is either of these sensors. Hope this helps

replace the temp sending unit! the thermostat only keep your engine cool by changing from hot to cold water in the engine block! the sending unit if is damage it will read hot when cold or hot when cold, sometimes stick to hot or cold.

Subject : Diesel Cooling system
G'day, My wife drove my 94 Lotus diesel Bighorn whilst I was away and it over heated, due to having lost all the coolant in the rad!
Anyway she got it home and I checked for leaks, perished hoses, the thermostat, compression, water in the oil, oil in the water, water in the cylinders, and flushed through the system - all OK. Ran it for a couple of days over short trips no probs. Temp gauge working OK. Fired it up the other day and it had dumped all its fluid again. I found a leak coming from the crank pulley, just wondering if there is a "frost bung" or something similar missing?
Have any of you used any of the "leak stopping" products available? And what were the results?
Thanks for any tips or help

Before you get drastic check that you don't have the cold weather start fitted to your vehicle - if you do this could be the problem - there is a wire somewhere that you pull off and it goes away! Also, log onto www.ITOC.co.uk and ask the forum - they are great!

hi after fitting a new tank you more than likely have to bleed the system pretty straight forward take the outlet hose off the hand primer that sits on top of the fuel filter thats the hose that leads to the motor, but leave the other hose on that comes from the tank and start pumping the primer up and down until fuel runs constantly it may take 2min or5min once the fuel runs constantly on the down push hold the plunger down and slide the hose back on than release, then pump the plunger until it gets hard ,then it should be all go

take our the brake calipher by removing two bolts. take out the old pads.before replacing the pads loosen the bleeder nut. get a small C-clamp and put one end over the calipher piston (the thing that pushes the pads) and the other on the calipher housing. tighten (to squeeze the piston) the clamp slowly until brake fluid comes out of the bleeder nut. (the reason for this is because it will be difficult to reinstall the caliphers with new pads since they are too thick.)remove the clamp and install the new pads. it should not be difficult to re-install the calipher housing. tighten the bleeder nut. now the bleeding.start the engine and have someone to step on the brakes (push the brake several times and hold all the way down then loosen again the bleeder nut then tighten it again. do this a few times until air is eliminated from the brake lines ( if only fluid squirts solidly from the bleeder then you doing ok). bleed only if all pads on all 4 wheels has been replaced. feel the brakes while bleeding. the pedal should go all the way down. be sure not visible leakage is present in the caliphers before this procedure or else you have to replace the calipher/piston repair kit.

hi first check and make sure the clamps and clips are tight around the hoses as it may start sucking air,is your fuel filter new /old it may need changing otherwise take the outlet hose off which sits ontop of filter thats the one that leads to the engine, start pumping until the fuel runs constantly,on the down pump hold the plunger down then slide the hose back on tighten everything up and pump until its hard then it should be all go ,if not get a new filter and repeat process

Does anyone have any idea what might be the cause of horrible metal to metal squeeling noise that comes from the rear nearside wheel. Have replaced discs and pads on both sides but problem still there. noise can disappear when it goes over a bump but comes back again. is causing smoke to appear. Do you think it could be the wheel bearing? Is this hard to fix?

Yes but just to make sure jack it up then put a bar under the wheel then lift it up the wheel should go up a bit inside the axle. No not a big job to replace.First remove the disc again and disconect the H.B.cable There are 4 bolts at the back of the disc on the axle unscrew the bolts then pull out the half shaft may take a bit of force to remove when you have the half shaft out there is only one bearing on it(you probably only have the 2 rings left by now one in the axle housing the other on the shaft) replace that be sure to seal the joint well when you put the half shaft back in. oil brakes dont mix. After you have it back together be sure to change the diff. oil as bits of the bearing can get into it after driving for a round 100 miles change the diff oil again. Always remember oil is the cheapest part to buy and easiest to fit!

Hi, could be sticking sliders not releasing the calliper properly, remove the calliper and sliders, clean off any gunk with wd40 or similar and regrease them with high temperature copper grease. Can use a cotton bud or a small flat screwdriver wrapped in a bit of cloth soaked in wd40 or petrol to get into the slider holes. Hopefully should solve your problem.

Seen a few on ebay seem to be keenly priced you can get recon. ones but it seems they dont last as long probably depends on who recon. them and the material the use. Better to buy a genuine second hand one thats a genuine part. Check the milage of the trooper its comming from.

Subject : Isuzu Trooper Monterey 3.0TD 1998
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help. I have a 1998 Opel Monterey 3.0L TD, which has the Isuzu diesel engine. It recently died on me and I am told that it is a probelm with the fuel injectors/sensors, which apparently is a common problem with this engine. Does anyone have any idea on what this common problem is? I am loath to take it to a main dealer without knowing what the issue is. Thanks in advance for any help.

Troopers, some fronteras, brava et al have the charge relay, usually in the black fuse/relay under the hood, on the left. I think the blue one is the relevant one usually. Once the engine starts the alt' sends a current to this relay which clicks it on powering then the fan circuit etc. Somehow it also affects the various warning lights. Youir fault will be either the charge circuit fuse, the relay or the alternator. Brava or Mk1 Trooper Alts will fit, but vac' pump hasnt as much capacity so brakes may feel wooden! Wiring will need to be fiddled with as plugs to alt are a bit different on each, good luck, new or rebuilt alts start at least ?160 usually, relays youll pick up in any scrapyard.

all isuzu and vauxhalls with isuzu engines have charging relays fitted on diesel engined vehicles. usaualy when this relay goes wrong it blows the alternator. if you change a alternator always fit a new charging relay. it is usualy fitted behind ur under the fuse box. it is small and black only 1" square.
you will also notice if you put a volt meter across the battery you will find that it is over charging this is what causes the warning lamps to come on

It's been my experience that the warning light can be an annoying little thing.
The first thing to ask would be when was the last tune up?Next, listen for vacuum leaks. An unhooked hose can cause the computer readings to be off and here comes the light.Fuel filter is another along with oxygen sensors.Depending on the car, there can be a few of these.Easiliest accsesed one being(on most cars)on the intake manifold.A small thing resembling a spark plug.
Any tune up shop should have a diagnostic machine they can hook you up to,but of course, for a price.

Depends on the type I'm on my second. On the first you had to stop, select the four wheel drive and then go, the front hubs automatically engaged as you went. To disengage you had to stop deselect and the drive backwards for a couple of meters for the front hubs to disengage.
My current one is imported and selection is the same, i.e. stop to select ratio but my hubs require manual un/locking by twisting a "key" on or off on each front hub

GO TO A WHEEL DEALER THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE DIFFERANCE FOR IF YOU PUT WRONG WHEELS ON THE WHOLE RUNNING ALINGMENT GOES WRONG (i.e WHEELS STEERING WILL WANDER ON THE STEERING WHEEL LIKE A HALF TURN A DIFFERANCE)
ALSO YOUR WHEEL BEARING WILL HAVE TO BE RENEWED OR HAVE YOUR BEARINGS CHECKED FOR THE WIDER YOU GO THE MORE LOAD ON THE EXTRA WIDTH LIKE SNAPING A TWIG AT THE END OF ITS STRETCH
