simular problem with mine, 3.1ltd d 1995, the alternator packed in as all the lights on dashboard came on, and the heater stopped and wipers stopped, lights dimmed etc. The engine had fuel, however when at junctions it didn't like iddling, and it was trying to cut out. Then afterwards, if you didnt apply the accelelator it stopped and had tobe jump started! An aa man came and said it needed an alternator and maybe a fuel pump? WE got another alternator, that is kicking out the correct amps at 13 and above, however, the dash lights are still lit? + the blowers don't work? it still cuts out when you start it eventually, but as soon as you apply the accelerator it dies!

Subject : No power to change auto gears
I’m hoping that some of you nice people out there will have either come across this, or experienced it for yourselves. I have a “W” Reg, Vauxhall Frontera 2.2 limited diesel with an automatic gearbox.
The problem that I have is that it feels like it has no power i.e. it wants to but there is just nothing there, and that the automatic changing of gears is somewhat delayed especially in top gear revving up to three thou+ before it will decide to change up to it. The engine management light has also come on just to worry me some more as well. It smokes a bit blue on a cold start up but soon stops and I have to wonder if the turbo works at all. The car is fairly new to me and also its my first auto so I know diddly swat to make things even more interesting. There are no strange noises bangs or clunks when it changes gear just no power (to change gear) on a flat it struggles to get to 50 mph but once going it can reach 65mph so at least I wont get done for speeding!!!!!!!!

  • Subject : Re : No power to change auto gears
Give the gearbox a small service ie change the gear oil and the gearbox filter cos i have found that to help i had auto before and it was really slugish going up the gears i changed all of the above and it helped alotthe filter is inside the bottom of the gearbox its usually a square metal thing once u take the gearbox sump off it will be bolted on to the bottom of the box u cant miss it but b carefull coz it has rubber o'rings on it.
Let me know how u get on.

      Hi,
Surely its the brake bands which need adjusting on your truck? These dictate when the box changes up to the next gear. Too slack and theres a considerable delay before the upward change. At least one of the adjusters is on the outside of most boxes, but probably the one you need to adjust is inside the sump. Drain G/box oil remove sump, and the adjuster will be a setscrew with a locknut. Adjust this in 1/4 turn and try. if not enough, give another 1/4 turn in. Dont forget to tighten locknut!

Subject : Vauxhall Monterey 3.2 - Brakes spongy / Travel with pedal - Poor Braking.
I have recently purchased a 3.2 Vauxhall Monterey. Had it checked out and serviced recently (£400 inc new timing belt) however the brakes are poor. It had to have new pads on the back but never the less the brakes are still poor. The guy at the garage who serviced it said he had bled the brakes after fitting the new pads but he agreed they didn't feel right but he hadn't a clue as to what it might be. The brakes feel spongy and there is a lot of travel in the pedal. I have to really tread hard to get it to stop anything like half decent (god help it in an emergency stop situation). I have read somewhere that the engine should be running when the brakes are bled but i'm also ware that there could be a number of reasons why the brakes are poor. The main thing that concerns me is that my Wife will be using the car as her main car and our kids will also be present and I don't want her driving something with dodgy brakes. I will not let anyone drive it until I am happy with the brakes. Could anyone give me any pointers to get started with. The local vauxhall garage want £70 just to look at the bloody thing. The local Isuzu dealers want £35, then £70 per hour even if they can't suggest anything !!!) I dont mind spending the money to get it fixed but I don't want to waste money either.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with my braking problem.

Many Thanks

Has it got a load sensing valve fitted? If so, has this been bled? Sounds to me like master cylinder seals have been turned by forcing fluid back past them when retracting pistons. Clamp each hose off and try the brakes then. If still a spongy pedal, its the master cylinder at fault.

My Brava has an intermittant fault where it sometimes loses, usually just after starting up the engine. Today I revved the engine on starting up, engine wasn't cold as hadn't been parked up for long, and it wouldn't go above 2000 revs even with my foot flat to the floor and then dropped slightly with no change in acceloration. With steering lock applied the front wheels can be seen to judder which kicks back through the steering wheel. Disengage four wheel drive and it's gone & drives lovely again. Any accurate prognosis welcome. Ta

Might be that diff box is wind up, this happended to my Frontera 3.2 v6, you should never use a part time 4 wheel drive on a good surface, only use when off road or ice/snow present.

Remedy - put in 4x4 drive and reverse using full lock bot ways, this should unwind and allow you to switch off 4x4.

If you use when road surafce is good eventually it will shear and will be expensive.

Yes it was the problem, i took the injectors out (bit fiddly) and cleaned with a wire brush,as they were very sooty, then sprayed with wd40 and really gave them a good clean, then re assembled and tested, the next day i re fueled and put in some injector cleaner additive in to the fuel and she now runs like a dream no more juddering at 50 mph 2000 rpm, hope this help, Ben

BLACK SMOKE OR BLUE? oil consumption would point towards worn rings and theres always some oil being 'breathed' back into the turbo inlet pipe..yes it would take a while to clear if theres a lot of it in there..clean it out of the pipe and try it then, see if its cleared...monitor your oil consumption....if your turbo oil seals were popped youd be losing oil fairly fast and the seals can blow oil into the exhaust or the inlet side of the turbo and be sucked into the engine to be burned..either way the oil would be subject to heat/burning,causing your smoke but would NOT CLEAR UP if its a turbo oil seal problem (ever seen michael schumacher blow a turbo?).....
BLACK SMOKE AND ITS A FUEL PROBLEM..pump/injectors..how many miles ? dirty oil will shorten the life of engine/turbo.

This Sounds like a problem I had with my 2.5 tdi and it turned out to be the master cylinder seals, air was being sucked through when the brake pedal was depressed which caused the pedal to sink.
I thought initially it would leak but apparently not. because the lack of pressure when the foot pedal is lifted.

hope this is of some help to you.

Subject : Frontera exhaust
I have a 1999 2.2 frontera long wheelbase and the problem that I'm having is the exhaust sounds so loud when driving along inside the vehicle. Vauxhall have looked at it and so has my mechanic it is not leaking or touching the underside of the car, and they admit it does sound loud but have no real fix for the problem.Has anyone else come across this???????

Hi has anyone had a look at the exhaust manifold? Mine was cracked on the downpipe between the flat bracket bit and the actaul pipe, didnt see it (out of view) until i took it off - what a struggle!
Also check the cat for cracks, the 2.2 petrol is renowned for exhaust issues especially on the manifold!

Subject : Fuel saving
I have a Vauxhall Monterey 3.2 V6 Turbo and recently found an ingenious device on the net that suposedly improves the fuel consumption by 27%. All the data looked impresive. I bought the device for ?4.95 and was expecting to receive some sort of electronic device that sits on top of the fuel inlet pipe near the turbo charger. Instead I received a 2" long magnetised black plastic strip about 1cm wide. This is suposedly impregnated with a special metal called neodymium which is usually used to create super-magnets. This strip is only slightly magnetised and is supposed to create resonance between its surfaces because it becomes a super inductor. I am a lecturer in Electronics Engineering and frankly not convinced by their explanation. I have fitted the device anyway thinking that it might work. Has anyone had the same experience? If so please let me know if this is hoax that cost me a fiver. Cheers!

Subject : Vauxhall Brava brake problem!!!!
Can anybody help me with a problem I'm having on a 1995 Vauxhall Brava 2.5d 4x4. When I hit the brakes hard there is hardly any braking and I then need to pump the pedal in order to get any pressure. Also, while stationary, if I depress the brake pedal it slowly creeps down as if pressure is being lost. There is no fluid loss and I've bled the system thoroughly. I've changed the master cylinder as I that was my next suspicion, then the load sensing valve as advised by some but neither has worked. I can't figure out what the problem is!! Any help by anyone who has had similar problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Subject : Vauxhall Brava clear Indicators
Hello can anyone tell me where i can get a pair of clear front indicator lamps for my 97 P reg facelift Vauxhall Brava. They are rectangular in shape and fit in the bumper by 2 screws but standard ones are orange and look so dated with all the other goodies i have fitted, Including a Classic A BAR that i bought from these nice people at FORMULA 4X4 who i must say were the cheapest price i could find by far for an A bar. Many thanks Carl.

This sounds like the flexi pipe.
You can order directly from your Vauxhal dealer.
Cost me about ?275 around 3 years ago.
Fitted it myself on the drive and toook no more than 45mins.
Luckily I got someone to look at it prior to getting the part and they cut off the seized nuts and bolts which made the job easier!
